At the age of 16, John Zupan 〔(John Zupan runs grocery business at full throttle ) ''Portland Business Journal'', December 13, 1996〕 began work as a courtesy clerk at Sheridan Fruit. He spent subsequent years working in produce—logging 11 years at Fred Meyer as the Produce Manager and Produce District Manager—before founding his business in 1974. Today Zupan’s is run by John’s son Mike,〔(Executive Profile - Mike Zupan ) ''Portland Business Journal'', October 2, 2009〕 who has been President since 1994. John, while semi-retired, remained involved in the company until his death in 2011.
